Fire and biodiversity planning workshop

Learn how to protect your property from bushfire while also protecting its biodiversity values at a free Nature Conservation Margaret River Region (NCMRR) workshop later this month.

Date: 10am – 1pm, Friday 24 September 2021
Venue: Tanah Marah, Bramley
FREE event, please reserve your spot as places are limited –  https://events.humanitix.com/firewise-workshop

The three-hour workshop will be led by Gary McMahon, who owns and runs Ecosystem Solutions and is a level 3 Bushfire Planning and Design-accredited practitioner, long term fire and rescue member, and ecologist. The event will be held at the Tanah Marah property at Bramley near Margaret River. Tickets are free but spots are limited so it’s essential to register.

As well as a theory session, the workshop will include a practical component on how to assess your fuel loads and how you can incorporate fire for ecological management on your property. Nature Conservation Margaret River Region staff will also be on hand to assist with the workshop, share knowledge and answer questions.

The Margaret River region is home to incredible flora and fauna biodiversity – much of it located on private land. So, this workshop will help give landholders the knowledge, tools and know-how to reduce their bushfire risk while also maintaining and protecting flora, fauna, and biodiversity at their place.

Topics to be covered include:

  • how ecological bushfire planning can maintain biodiversity and protect human life and your assets
  • your fire management decisions and how they can help our unique flora and fauna in a drying climate
  • Asset Protection Zone requirements and garden design
  • fire regimes
  • fire, plants and animals
  • fire and the spread of weeds and disease
  • post-burn monitoring

The workshop is the latest in a series of events as part of the For Nature Landowner Stewardship Program, designed to help you give nature a hand at your place. Registering is free and comes with loads of benefits for locals, like grants for conservation work at your place, free equipment hire and practical guides and resources online.
