'Our Patch' students showcase their catchment learning through video

On Friday 8 December 2017 upper primary students from Cowaramup to Augusta gathered with invited guests to view the “Our Patch” Movie Matinee at the Margaret River Cultural Centre.

The event was the culmination of the ‘Our Patch’ students investigations and travels through their local catchments. Students had conducted catchment tours meeting farmers, viticulturists, tourist operators, Wadandi custodians and scientists along the Cowaramup, Margaret River, Yalgardup, Calgardup, Turner Brook and Blackwood waterways. Through their excursions and further research students identified the key values of their catchments from threatened species to cultural values. They then also thought about some of the key threats to the watersheds and what they could do about them to try and care for their areas.Students came up with solutions like mapping the weeds along the streams, planting and re-vegetating stream banks, educating the community about stormwater and eradicating feral species like goldfish.

Each school documented their learning through video with the assistance of local videographer Mike Dunn. The videos provide a visual journey of each classes efforts. The videos demonstrates that by connecting children with their local community and their natural environment they can be empowered to make a real difference to where they live. Students can become stewards of ‘their patch’. The ‘Our Patch’ Movie Matinee showcased the catchment videos to ‘Our Patch’ funders, all those who assisted with the catchment tours and video production, teachers and students.

Nature Conservation would like thank Mike Dunn for being so generous with his time and equipment. A special thank you also to the ‘Our Patch’ funders: the Rotary Club of Margaret River, Cowaramup Lions Club, Shire of Augusta Margaret River, Cullen Wines and participating ‘Our Patch’ schools. These organisations provide the community support that ensures the success of the ‘Our Patch Environmental Education Program.
